Institute of European and American Studies
In August 1969, Dr. Wang Shih-chieh, the late President of Academia Sinica, proposed the establishment of a permanent American Studies institution in the Republic of China. The Center for American Studies was founded in May 1973 and Dr. Chen Chi-lu was appointed its director. On July 1, 1974, the Center was officially reorganized as the Institute of American Culture, Dr. Chu Yen succeeded Dr. Chen as director in July 1977. When Dr. Chu's term of office expired in June 1983, Dr. Tung-hsun Sun assumed the directorship. Since June 1988, research members of the Institute have been officially divided into three divisions: the Humanities, Social and Economic Studies, and Legal and Political Studies. Dr. Wei Liang-tsai took over the directorship on July 1, 1989, when Dr. Sun's term of office expired. In order to incorporate European studies into its research fields, the Institute officially adopted its current title on August 3, 1991. With a view to tapping competent scholars in European Studies, a European Studies Pre-paration Committee was formed with Dr. Chu Yen as advisor. On July 1, 1993, Dr. Jia-You Sheu assumed the directorship.
