Center for Asia-Pacific Area Studies

(CAPAS)

The Center for Asia-Pacific Area Studies (CAPAS) was established in January 2003 to further integrate the research resources for facilitating productive multi-disciplinary studies on the Asia-Pacific area at Academia Sinica. CAPAS is the upgrade and reorganization of the formerly Asia-Pacific Research Program (APARP); Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia and the Pacific Islands now constitute the three main area foci. CAPAS also aims at cultivating a new generation of domestic Asia-Pacific scholarship and strengthen academic exchange and cooperation between Academia Sinica and the related research institutions around the world.

The Executive Director of CAPAS is Professor Hsin-Huang Michael Hsiao, Research Fellow of the Institute of Sociology.

  2. Enhance collaboration between Academia Sinica and other prestigious research institutions and scholars in Asia-Pacific, Europe and USA and promote academic exchange of mutual benefit
  3. Promote practical and policy studies related to the Asia-Pacific region
  4. Cultivate new talents in Asia-Pacific research
